Nov 13, 2013 Discovered in May 1992 in Vietnam, the saola is a cousin to the antelope, of the effectiveness of conservation efforts in critical saola habitat.”.
The saola may be a relict species, whose distribution and habitat has been reduced into the present small range by severe climactic shifts during and following the Pleistocene. The species may have been formerly distributed in wet forests at elevations below 400 m, but these areas in Vietnam are now densely populated by people, and are degraded and fragmented.
It remains an enigma into the 21st century. The most recent verified sighting occurred during August 2010 in the Phou Sithone Endangered Species Conservation Area, a WCS-supported site in Bolikhamxay Province Lao PDR. Saola naturally inhabit areas which are densely forested, however increasing deforestation in the area is having a severe impact on the Saola’s habitat. Such deforestation, forces the Saola into smaller areas, increasing stress for the free-roaming animal and as a result impacting the reproduction of the animal. The main threats to the saola are hunting and fragmentation of its range through habitat loss. Snares set in the forest to capture wild boar, sambar or barking deer also trap saola, while hunting to supply the illegal trade in wildlife has led to a massive increase in pressure on the species.

During the winters, these animals tend to migrate down to the lowlands.
The Saola Pseudoryx nghetinhensis (Mammalia; Bovidae) is IUCN Critically Endangered, but its ecology remains almost entirely unknown. Here we present the first characterization of Saola habitat use. We assessed Saola macrohabitat and microhabitat characteristics using Saola sighting location data obtained from local people.
Local agriculture that is increasing into the habitat of the Saola. It faces various dangers, which has led to its low population (“Saola”, n.d.). Some reasons for its decline include habitat loss, hunting, and its reproductive cycle (“ Jul 5, 2015 The saola was discovered by Western science in 1992, but local villagers in the saola's habitat in the jungles of Laos have, of course, always Nov 13, 2013 Discovered in May 1992 in Vietnam, the saola is a cousin to the antelope, of the effectiveness of conservation efforts in critical saola habitat.”.
CLIMATE: The climate in the area of Vietnam where the Saola’s are found is usually in the northwest-southeast of vietnam. The temperatures can generally be very hot but they do have a monsoon season when the weather gets cooler and drier. It’s a tropical area with high humidity and a high rate of rainfall.

There is a paler shade of brown on the neck and the belly, a black dorsal stripe, a pair of nearly parallel horns (present on both sexes). Se hela listan på a-z-animals.com Our habitat model indicated that there was no significant association between Saola and elevation (range of observations 592–1,112 m vs. 440–1,200 m of available habitat); a recent summary report suggested that the Saola were a mid-elevation species occurring mostly between 500 and 800 m (Timmins et al., 2016). 2017-11-27 · The team was also surprised to find very little evidence of hunting, especially snaring, in the forests.
Saola prefers life in dense forests that have good supply of running water (near the riverbanks). Although not much is known about saola, it is listed as critically endangered species due to accelerated habitat loss and hunt. Horns of saola are collected as a trophy while other parts of its body serve as ingredients in folk medicine.

Habitat loss - For the saola’s a very large amount of their habitat has been lost as a result of deforestation in the area. These area’s have been wiped out to make way for new plantation, agriculture and infrastructure resulting in the saola’s being shoved into a smaller space.
The main habitat of the Saola is wet evergreen or deciduous forests throughout eastern Indochina. They are mostly found near rivers and in valleys often in really steep between 300 – 1800 metres above sea level. The main threats which face the Saola are: The Saola, pronounced sow-la, meaning ‘spindle horns’ in Vietnamese, is found in only one place in the world: the Annamite Mountains forests on the border between Vietnam and Laos.
